I hope you are all having a fabulous start to your weekend because it is finally Friday! Woohoo! Fridays are the best, everyone aways seems to be in a better mood, which in turn means more smiling and in the words of Buddy the Elf,
“I like smiling, smiling’s my favorite.”
Have you ever noticed when you’re out and about and you accidentally lock eyes with a stranger; its kinda awkward? Most people tend to look away, some awkwardly nod, and even some do the, “oh hey Bob!” as they move their head to look past you at the imaginary “Bob” behind you and pretend they weren’t making eye contact.
It worries me some that when this does occur, fewer and fewer people smile at each other. Why is that? I mean sometimes, I am so in my own world that all I can think about it the task at hand and that “everybody better get out of the way, I have things to do!” But, thats maybe 2% of the time. So, I did a little field study when I was at Target yesterday getting groceries. I made eye contact with as many people as possible; older folks and younger, and kept a running tally of how many people smiled at me when eye contact was made.
Now, keep in mind-it wasn’t a insane looking cheshire cat smile, it was just a normal “have a good day” smile…nothing creepy. Out of the 30 or so people I made eye contact with….get ready for it…two. A whopping two people smiled back. At first I was really disappointed in this, I mean; maybe people were having bad days or so in their own world they didn’t think to smile back, I don’t know. But this is what I realized, even if they didn’t smile back, I believe that they realized that someone was smiling at them. To see a happy person is always a 100 times better than seeing someone with a frown on their face.
So, this gets me back to the purpose of this post. Smiling is a universal sign of happiness. It automatically creates joy, comfort and can brighten a whole room. Why would you go around wearing a frown when you can spread some joy with a smile?
Here is the inspired challenge for the week; go out this week to your favorite store, coffee shop, or even your workplace and do one simple thing. Smile! See how it changes the attitudes of those around you and see how many people smile back! You never know, it could just turn someone’s whole day around and maybe your own too.
